What Do I Get for Trading In My Items?

Modified on Fri, 24 Apr at 1:05 PM

When you trade items at GameStop, you’ll receive cash or store credit, based on the item’s condition and current trade value.

Store credit is usually higher than cash, but when both are available, the choice is yours.

 How Trade Value Is Determined

When you bring items to a GameStop store, a store associate:

  1. Inspects the item in person
  2. Verifies it:
    • Works properly
    • Has no major cosmetic damage (scratches, cracks, blemishes, etc.)
  3. Processes it through GameStop’s system, which provides a pre-determined trade value

⚠️ Important:

  • All evaluations are made at the associate’s discretion
  • Trade values can change daily

What Affects My Trade Value?

Several factors influence the value you’re offered, including:

  • Supply and demand
  • Condition of the item
  • How new or current the item is
  • Market trends

Because of this, online estimates are not guarantees.

Can I Check Trade Value Before Going to the Store?

Yes—you can get a rough estimate using the Trade Center online:

Final value is always confirmed in store after inspection.

Cash vs. Store Credit — What’s the Difference?

After your trade is processed, you choose how you want to be paid:

Cash

  • Lower value than store credit
  • Availability depends on:
    • Whether the store has enough cash on hand
  • If cash isn’t available:
    • The amount may be issued on a prepaid Mastercard, usable anywhere

Store Credit

  •  Higher value than cash
  • Issued on a GameStop Trade Card
  • Can be used:
    • In store
    • Online

When You Don’t Need to Contact GameStop

You usually don’t need support assistance if:

  • Your trade value was lower than an online estimate
  • Cash wasn’t available and a prepaid card was offered
  • Store credit was higher than cash
  • The associate explained condition-based adjustments

These are all standard parts of the trade-in process.

⏱️ When Should I Contact GameStop?

Contact GameStop only if:

  • You believe an item was processed incorrectly
  • You need help locating a store that offers cash trades
  • The trade process wasn’t explained at the store
