How do Trades work?

Modified on Tue, 25 Mar at 5:46 PM

Have you ever wondered how GameStop has so many pre-owned games, controllers and consoles? This is because we take these items in trade from our customers! So do you have an old game you no longer play? Or a controller with stick drift? Well why not trade these items in towards something you really want! Most of our stores offer the option for either in-store credit or cash, but keep in mind that credit is usually higher than cash but in our stores where both are options, it's your choice.

Trade your old Games, Accessories, and tech!

We take a wide variety of items so that you can still get value out of the games and other tech you aren't using right now. Why not bring them in to your local GameStop so you can put it towards a brand new experience or even put it towards a new controller or headset in store? Here is a general list of items we take:

  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Smartwatches
  • Steam Deck
  • PSA Graded Trading Cards (Select Locations)
  • Video Game Consoles
  • Video Games
  • Video Game Accessories

Retro Gaming You can search the items you have here to see the trade value of the item.

Starting the process.

Simply bring the item to your nearest GameStop Store and the Store Associate will evaluate the item. Here are some things you can do to make your visit a little smoother:

  • If your item has a battery please charge it before bringing it in, this will make it easier to test it and ensure it is fully functional.
  • If you are trading something with multiple components please bring those components, for example if you were trading in a PlayStation 5, we require you bring the console, power cable, HDMI cable and a wireless controller made by Sony.
  • We ask you don't wipe any personal date from the device before bringing it in. why? So we are able to test all of the features of the device before wiping your information for you, wiping your information on your own won't prevent you from trading the item in but will take more time as we will need to set the device back up to test the features and components are working correctly.

What do we do with it?

This can depend on a couple factors like what item you are trading in and what condition it is in. If the item is in good condition and is an item our Store Associates can clean and disinfect safely, then the item may be sold by that store to another customer. However if the item is in poor condition or is an item that requires a more complete cleaning and disinfecting, then the item is sent to our Refurbishment Operations Center.

They will take these items and get them to like new condition, whether that means a deep cleaning or replacing a hard drive our teams at the ROC get these items fixed up and ready for you to enjoy! If an item can't be repaired that’s okay! The ROC will break it down and keep what parts can still be used and send the parts that can't be used to be recycled.

Our Refurbishment center is a Zero E-Waste Facility!
